Pet Therapy: Helping our Community
Greetings! My name is Tinkerbell. You may
have met me as Tiny. Three years ago, my
"family" dropped me off at B&B. I was in very
sad condition. They had broken my back,
rendering my hind legs useless. I was covered in
mange and fleas. In fact, I only had about ½ of
my hair! It took three flea baths to get rid of
those itchy parasites! Thanks to the gang at
B&B, those days are over. They took me in,
gave me a proper diet, a soft place to sleep and
time to mend my wounds. They even helped me
find my new home. My real family now takes
me to visit people as a pet therapist. They like
my therapy style... I really know how to listen!
I have visited retirement homes, elementary
schools, universities and hospitals. I hear my
next gig is a preschool. Hope there is some
residual peanut butter on those little hands to
lick off! Believe me, when you support B&B,
you bring new life to lots of abused and
neglected dogs that the world seems to have
turned their backs on. All I can say is THANK
YOU from the bottom of my little weiner heart.
Love, Tiny Tinkerbell
(Update on Tinkerbell: She's graduated to leading university lectures! Tinkerbell visited the Learning Center at Cal State LA to visit classes of general and special ed community children. She led discussions on how being different is okay. Students and teachers alike were fascinated with her courage and spirit as she wheeled around from student to student, reminding them that it's what is in your heart that counts. As you can see in the picture, she "graduated" with flying colors!)
----------
Pet therapy is a concept based on bringing the companionship and love of animals to people who may otherwise not be able to enjoy this type of relationship. Kathy Fuller and her daughter, Sami Blake, have been sharing their three dachshunds (including Tinkerbell!) with the residents of The South Pasadena Convalescent Hospital. Tinker is a very special being. As the result of abuse, her back legs do not function. However, this disability has not become disabling. Her indomitable spirit has proven to be inspirational and brings cheer to many residents of the retirement home.
Robyne M. Taylor takes dogs to visit in nursing homes. The picture on the right shows Jezebel working her sweet kisses on this lady! Jezebel and her wonderful folks, Robynne and David Taylor of Idyllwild and Rancho Mirage, now spend their days making lots of people happy!
"Not to hurt our humble brethern - the animals - is our first duty
to them, but to stop there is not enough. We have a higher mission
- to be of service to them whenever they require it... If you have
men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of
compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with
their fellow men."
-Francis of Assisi
